Junior High Course Outcomes
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Students must attend class every day unless prevented from doing so by
illness or some other legitimate reason. Regular attendance is
essential to positive progress in school work.
1. Any student absent from school
must upon his/her return to school bring a note from a parent/guardian
to the homeroom teacher explaining the absence.
2. Students absent from school without the permission
of the school or parent are considered to be truant. Absence from
individual classes is considered "skipping". In either case, the
student is expected to make up for the lost time. Recurrence of truancy
or skipping may result in legal action or other disciplinary measures.
3. From time to time during the school year, parents
wish to remove their child/children from school to attend religious
functions, to travel and to attend family functions. Such requests
should be made in writing to the principal prior to the event. While
those leaves may be granted, extended absences from school are
discouraged since they can be detrimental to student achievement.
Students must make arrangements to complete work missed during this
time of absence.
4. Students who are required to leave school during
the instructional day for any legitimate reason are to receive
permission at the office.
5. Students arriving late to school (i.e. after the
homeroom period) must report to the office and receive a late slip for
admittance to class. Lateness between classes will be noted by the
attending teacher and later by the administration if lateness persists.
6. Special assemblies, field trips, visits from
outside resource people and special presentations are all a part of the
learning experience and must be considered as regular time in school.
Absence from these activities is absence from school.
7. Work missed due to absenteeism must be completed
by the student. It becomes the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure
that their child is not disadvantaged.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework is a major component and a vital part of the Intermediate
School Program. It is an extension of the regular school day and is an
essential part of the learning process. It not only provides the
teacher with necessary feedback but also provides the student with an
opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge he/she has
acquired. The goal is to help students develop good homework/study
habits through regular homework assignments.
Homework Defined:
Homework is work or study assigned to students during class and
completed outside the class where it was assigned or during non-school
hours.
Purpose of Homework Assignments:
Homework assignments should generally fulfill one or more of the
following purposes:
1. Drill and additional practice to reinforce skills
introduced
in the classroom .
2. Assigned reading to prepare for upcoming
lessons/test
or as reinforcement of lessons already taught.
3. Completing work not completed in class or
laboratories.
4. Research activities in locating information.
5. Work on reports or projects of a long-term nature.
Amount of Homework:
The amount of homework normally increases as a student progresses
through school. It is not feasible to establish rigid time limits,
however, it is recommended that homework be a minimum of one hour and
thirty minutes to perform.
Late Homework:
It is the students responsibility to see that homework assignments are
handed in or are ready to be checked on the due date assigned by the
teacher. Students who fail to complete homework or present unacceptable
homework will be required to complete it or redo it. A late penalty may
be given as outlined by the Assignment Policy for incomplete or late
assignments.
Weekend/Vacation Homework:
It is preferable that homework be assigned, however, it is expected
that the amount be within the established guidelines.
Homework Requests Due to Absences:
When students are absent from school it is their responsibility to get
assignments made up upon their return. It is strongly suggested that
the student contact another student in class to gather the missed work.
If this cannot be done, contact the school giving the name of a student
who will bring home the missed work. Parents are also welcome to come
to the school and pick up homework.
Parent Responsibility:
All students are to use a homework assignment book, preferably the
Student Agenda. Parents should check this assignment book on a regular
basis in order for this to be an effective tool.
Parents are responsible for setting guidelines for good study habits at
home. They should monitor the time allotment for homework, see that
there is no interruption and provide a suitable setting (quiet, with a
table or desk) with the necessary supplies for use at home (pencils,
pens, paper, etc.).
