District Assignment Policy (Draft)

Assignment Policy : DRAFT.

Item 5.6 of the Administrative Regulations related to the Eastern School District ’s Assessment and Evaluation Policy states:  When students fail to comply to deadlines, an escalating level of intervention will occur. The following guidelines will apply at our school.

1.                   In order to experience academic success, it is expected that students complete all assignments.

Teachers will announce assignments, including due dates, in class and  encourage students to take note of the due date.  Notice of assignments will be posted on the homework section of the school’s website.

2.                 On the day that the assignment is due, teachers will inform students who have not submitted work, that the work is now late and that the following late penalty will apply:

One school day late =        10% deduction

Two school days late        =        20% deduction

Three school days late      =        30% deduction

If a student fails to hand in work on a due date and work is returned to the class prior to the student’s submission of the late work a grade of zero may be assigned.  If submitted, the work will be corrected and the mark kept on file for consideration at the end of the school year.  Please note that the one day late refers to the next school day and not the next class. For example, if an assignment is due on a Day 4 but the student does not pass it in until the next time they have the subject on Day 6,that would be considered two days late.

It is the student’s responsibility to hand the assignment to the teacher.

Sometimes circumstances arise that are beyond the student’s control.  These may affect his/her ability to ensure that pieces of evaluation are submitted on the designated due date. In this case, the circumstances need to be communicated by the parent to the teacher. The decision to extend the due date will be made at the discretion of the teacher and on an individual basis.

A parent does have the right to appeal that decision, in writing, to the principal.

3.                 When assignments are not completed the following interventions will be made:

·        On the first incident, the teacher will address it directly with the student and will note the incomplete assignment, the resulting grade with penalty and the date.

o       If the assignment is worth less than 5% of the overall grade for the year, parent contact may be made.

o       If the assignment is worth more than 5% of the overall grade for the year, parent contact will be made.

·        If a second incident occurs, a phone call/email to the parent will be made and recorded, in writing, by the teacher.  The teacher will also notify the assistant principal, by email, that the student has had two incomplete assignments in a given subject area.

·        On the third incident, the administration will meet with the student and will contact the parent to determine what must be done to ensure the student understands the importance of completing all assigned work.  Detentions, in-school or out of school suspensions will be considered at that time.

4.                 This policy excludes regular homework which a teacher may assign in support of a student’s achievement of course outcomes.
